Sigrid Hardy, a wife, mother, friend, coworker and teammate, was a kind and forgiving person. Sig was known for her silly personality and deep love of animals. Sig passed away on April 12, 2018, leaving behind her devoted husband, Derek, and two children, Cameron and Julia.

Managed by The Mayday Foundation, The Sigrid Hardy Memorial Scholarship was created in April 2019 with a goal of helping Thurston County high school graduates impacted by cancer pay for college expenses. In 2020, The Mayday Foundation expanded the reach to include Grays Harbor high school graduates as well. Students who have or have had cancer or whose parents or siblings have or have had cancer are encouraged to apply. Donations along with proceeds from the Going the Distance summer athletic event fund the scholarship.

“I am grateful that people are so generous and that generosity has Sig’s name attached to it.  We’re just a middle class family trying to get by every day,” said Derek Hardy. “Cancer throws a cloud over a family and this scholarship will throw some sunlight back into their lives.”

Applications are due by 5:00 pm on Sunday, March 31, 2024 with a decision by mid-May. To read the full story about Sigrid Hardy, click here. Please note that priority is given to students whose has been impacted directly by cancer such as their own cancer diagnosis or that of a parent or sibling.
